New Hope for People Diagnosed with Depression
When treatment for depression through prescription medications or other forms of therapy does not significantly alleviate symptoms or provide effective relief, CenterPointe Hospital offers new hope to treat depression to many people through a non-invasive, advanced technology called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy.
TMS Therapy uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression. TMS therapy targets key areas in the brain believed to control mood which is underactive in people with depression. TMS uses highly focused magnetic pulses to target the prefrontal cortex of the brain. Magnetic pulses pass painlessly through the skull to stimulate this area, restoring it to normal function which can alleviate depression symptoms. The technology used in TMS Therapy is similar to MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and has a long, documented history supporting its safety and use.
As an area leader in behavioral health treatments and services, CenterPointe Hospital provides TMS therapy to its broadening list of treatment options for those individuals suffering from depression who have not found relief through pharmacological therapy. The FDA-approved therapy is designed to help people return to their routine activities and feel like themselves again. In some cases, individuals achieve full remission from their symptoms.
During the four to six week treatment course, patients receive daily outpatient care in the comfort of a physician’s office, where each treatment lasts approximately 20-40 minutes. During therapy, the individual is alert and able to resume normal activities immediately afterward. TMS Therapy is covered by most commercial insurance plans, Medicare and Tricare.
